Mobbing
The first step is to make a pledge. By pledging, you are simply promising to donate a small sum -- we recommend $5 -- to an established charity in the near future. To make your pledge, visit Charity Mob's "Pledge" page and complete the online form. To help the mob grow, recruit your friends to do the same. This is where the fun begins. Once the pledging stage ends, the mob gets to decide where all the promised funds go. To facilitate this, Charity Mob moderates a 24-hour competition via Twitter, where individuals vote for the organization or charity they think deserves the cash. To vote, simply tweet out your favorite charity's handle along with the @CharityMob and the hashtag, #CMOBVOTE. At the end of the 24-hour period, Charity Mob tallies the votes and declares a winning organization. A winner has been declared, and now it's time to mob for good! Through email and Twitter, Charity Mob sends out a specific date and time so that all the individuals who pledged can synchronize their donations to the winning organization -- thus creating a virtual flash mob of generosity!

A Brief History

In Fall 2009, Charity Mob 1.0 launched as a thesis project out of the Indiana University Individualized Major program and the Indiana University Telecommunications program. The first Charity Mob experiment ran for approximately two months and operated as a user-driven, social fundraising organization. Combining game mechanics and crowdfunding, the project raised over 300 dollars for a small number of charities including Wonderlab Children’s Museum and Bear Hugs. Even more, the site gained a community of more than 300 members promoting over 60 unique charities.
